uswesports USWE Hydration Packs: The Brand You've Used, but Don't Know

Bryan Bosch

Every industry has iconic brands that pretty much everyone knows about. If you ask a rider to name a leading dirt bike exhaust brand, they’ll likely say FMF. Ask the same about handlebars and you’ll probably hear Renthal or Pro Taper.

I also encounter brands that make really good stuff, but for any number of reasons, just aren't well known. One such brand is USWE Sports, a Swedish manufacturer of high-quality, high-performance hydration packs for the moto, mtb, snow, and running sports. Interestingly enough, you just might have experienced a USWE product, as they made packs for popular moto brands such as Leatt, MSR, and Fly Racing.

Action Pack, NOT Backpack!

So, what's the "secret sauce" that USWE bakes into its action packs that makes them especially good for us dirt bike guys? At the heart of USWE hydration packs is NDM (No Dancing Monkey ?) technology. It’s a goofy visual for their award winning, patented 4-point suspension harness and buckle system that allows the pack to form fit very snug against your body, virtually stopping pack bounce in rough terrain, while maintaining comfort, freedom-of-movement & breathing capacity. This sounds like a simple enough task, but it’s taken many iterations and thousands of sweaty riding hours to get USWE action packs to this level of performance. Even the bladder itself has design elements that work in concert with their patented harness to minimize and control pack movement. Here's a short video that demonstrates NDM tech (harness demo @ 1:12).

From the Swedish Horse's Mouth

Recently I caught up with Karl-Johan Engdahl, USWE Co-Founder and Business Development & Marketing Director for a few questions:

TT: The USWE name... What’s the backstory there? Something interesting in Swedish?

Quote

Karl: USWE means ”kick-ass” in Swedish! ? The team behind the company are a dedicated group of weekend warriors & racers with a straight forward philosophy; Everything is possible! The name is pronounced [you-swii].

TT: USWE has been in the hydration pack game for over a decade. What accomplishment are you guys most proud of?

Quote

Karl: Our awards. We’re the underdog who works extremely hard and we just love to bite the big brands in the ass and walk away with the cool awards. Several times, we’ve proven that it's not the size of the brand that matters, but the knowledge, passion and guts of our team.

TT: Amazing riders like Colton Haaker, Cody Webb, Taylor Robert, Billy Bolt, and Alfredo Gomez are USWE sponsored. How much of a role do they play in shaping USWE product development and design?

Quote

Karl: We involve both our athletes and the weekend warrior ambassadors a lot in our product development. Everyday these guys are out there being the badasses on the track, the trail, in the dirt and in the middle of nowhere. We collect all their feedback and we use the gold when we design our products. All love to our athletes and ambassadors!

TT: At least in the US, you can walk into most big box stores and pick up a hydration pack for pretty cheap. Why are some riders still spending more money on USWE hydration packs?

Quote

Karl: We don’t do traditional backpacks. We do ACTION PACKS that’s made for core racing and adventures where the perfect fit and functionality are crucial. USWE packs are designed with our patented NDM (No Dancing Monkey) 4-point harness technology that make the pack bounce free in action. It allows you to run the pack really tight, without cramping your style. This is why more-n-more riders are joining the USWE family.

TT: Where can we expect to see USWE this year in terms of events & series?

Quote

Karl: We’re preparing a big push in the US for 2019 where we’ll be involved with key athletes and teams, media, events and series. We’ll present more of this plan in December when we do our US launch

TT: The floor is yours Karl. What else do you want riders to know about USWE and its products?

Quote

Karl: USWE isn’t new on the US market, our products have actually been used by thousands of American riders for more than 10 years, but under license with brands like Leatt, Fly and MSR. We’re the original and now we’re entering the US market under the USWE brand. Check out our kick-ass products at uswe-sports.com

The "NO DANCING MONKEY" is for real, and the pack goes on and off quickly and easily.  It is also very comfortable.  All the features of the pack and bladder are well thought out.

I love this hydration pack.  It is my favorite by far. 👍

I'm not a big fan of my USWE...yet.  Chafes (sp) my neck, I wear it over my chest protector and it slides down in the back.  Maybe it's me not adjusting it correctly.  I do like the quick on/off!

No plastic taste. I got on the trail today with a new one and forgot to rinse bladder and remove plastic before heading out. Normally first bladder or two is really plastic-y tasting. Not this one. Really was ready to use off the shelf.

I got the A4 pack a little over a year ago, and a few months into ownership, two zippers went south and started to open from the wrong side.

One email to USWE, a few pictures, and within a week, I had a BRAND NEW PACK, expressed from Europe! The Ranger pack is just a great, holds exactly what i need, and is super comfortable.

I've been using a Ranger 9 for a couple of months and I love it. The harness is comfortable, easy to adjust, easy on/off and it really is the business when it comes to keeping a full pack from bouncing around. I also like the updated bladder sealing system. It makes for filling, closing, and washing a piece of cake. The quick release drinking tube from the bladder is better than the old push and twist system as well. The cargo pack itself isn't overly special competitively, but their harness and drinking system is one of the best, and the best I've used personally. If you wear a hydration pack all day and you ride in rougher terrain, USWE is an awesome option.

I totally concur with Bryan Bosch's thoughts on the USWE Ranger 9.  I have been using hydration packs since 2003, and I have never found one I like as much as the USWE.

I just started using the Airborne 9.  The harness is slick.  Its easy to adjust to get it just right.  I carry a Silky Big Boy for sawing logs, and the one button release for the harness is nice.  Easy off, Easy on.  The 9L size is a bit minimalist.  I can pack water, a wind breaker, tools, pump, saw, phone, wallet, food for the day.  If you need more than that get the 15L.

I like their phone pack and tool bag as well.  The phone gives you a quick access point for your phone or PLB, and the tool wrap is exactly what I was looking for.

Totally agree on the easy on/off of the harness. The wide arm holes don't hand up on gear and the single clasp is stupid simple to use. Glad you like your's.👍

Due out this spring, USWE has partnered up with the Caselli Foundation where for each KC66 branded USWE pack sold, the foundation gets a cut of the deal to fund their racer safety efforts. For those that didn't know, Caselli was one of USWE's first US sponsored riders. We think this is pretty cool. ?

Can you tell me the difference(s) between the Ranger and Outlander 9 liter models?  Look very similar, different colors/graphics obviously.   they look almost identical....

Got an answer from their customer service.  I also just noticed their sized too small for me, 84-110cm doesn't seem likely to fit my 120cm chest + armor... but of a bummer.

Quote

Hi!

Yes the Outlander is made out of thinner and lighter materials (Best for MTB use) and the Ranger is made out of thicker and more durable but heavier materials (Best for moto use). The Ranger pack also have a more premium bladder and mouthpiece while the Outlander have a basic one. If this is your first USWE pack I can recommend the Outlander as that is the model most people start off with. However if you want a pack with more durable materials and with a more premium hydration system I recommend the Ranger pack.

Best regards,

Fredrik @ USWE

Good you got an answer. I didn't hear back from my contact over there, but to be fair, he's a traveling man for USWE, so likely just smokin' busy. Yeah, bummer on the fitment. They really are amazing hydration packs!

The strap arrangement is suitable for attaching 'stuff' and sure looks nice.

I've asked their customer service if they have a larger size harness, seems like something easy enough to create.  If/when I get an answer I'll post here.

Got an answer from USWE:

We have the XXL harness here https://www.uswe-sports.com/us/accessories/front-strap-set that can be added to any NDM Race harness pack making the harness about 100-140cm in total chest size.

Excellent!  It was right there all along, just didn't dig deep enough.

Excited to be a part of supporting the launch of the KC66 Edition Hydration Pack from USWE Sports! I've been riding with a USWE pack since last fall, they are flat out the best I've ridden with, so it feels good to support their efforts knowing that it will also directly benefit the KC66 Foundation. Established in 2013, the KC66 Foundation has a core mission of protecting and supporting the Lives of Off-Road Riders.
