YZ 125 GEAR LEVER, HELP!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I have a yz 125 2007 and i have now gone through 4 gear levers they are MSR aluminium and i havnt had much luck with them, and i dont have money to go out and buy the original gear lever and also i cant get a small spanner in there to tighten the nut up i have to wrong sized spanners so my nut is being rounded.., so..

i need your help how does this sounds

I have an old gear lever with some teeth still on it, i was thining taking off the nut and finding a wing nut with the rod on it and putting that through insted,, and then using locktight to double secure it. this way i dont have so find a short spanner to tighten it up i can just use a small shifter and tighten the wing nut up??

Would this work do you guys think? I am over buying crappy gear levers and dont have any money at the moment to spend???

Let me know what you guys think!!

CURRENT GEAR LEVER I THINK ITS MSR

Your shift shaft is probably damaged (splines worn)... that is why you are stripping shift levers so quickly.

Buy the right spanner instead, they're cheep and I'm sure you'll find more uses over time. Worst case, get an adjustable spanner or a vice grips, it'll be better to round off the nut to where you can only use a vice grips than it would be to round off the shift shaft and have to split the cases. Maybe put a bit of strong epoxy between the shifter and shaft, something like pc 7.

Hi thanks for the reply, the shaft is fine theres plenty of teeth left on it. And my biggest problem is that its the hardest spot to fit anything in there theres not much room to work with. What size is the correct spanner?

No clue, bring the lever to a hardware store and try them out.

Yeah i gathered that mate but your not understanding ill explain in the picture i attached below,

So the 'BLUE' arrow means that is where the bolt is off that particular gear lever, the 'RED' arrow means that is where MY bold is,, so there is no way i can get a socket in there at all with out hitting the frame.. Who ever made these gear levers were not thinking very well...

Hold your shifter in the "shift up" position and that will rotate the lever and give you clearance to loosen the bolt.

I've gone through a bunch of MSR Aluminum shift levers as well, wore the teeth right off of them.

Turns out that even though it appeared that my shift shaft had teeth on it, the new one I bought was a huge difference.

I also am fed up with the aluminum shift levers and opted for a IMS Steel shift lever. Hopefully i wont have to deal with the shift lever again for a long time.

Motos for life, after reading your post again I think I understand your problem. The MSR lever bolt is orientated at a different angle then stock, so you REALLY can not get to it from underneath. Since you do not have the cash to buy an OEM lever you can drill out the MSR and use a thru bolt with a nylock nut on top. I have done this years ago but it did work for me. Why are you breaking so many levers? I think that the OEM would serve you best in the long run, but until then drill that sucker out and do the bolt and nylock nut. All the best.
