Is it as simple as buying the light assembly and number plate for an XC-W? plug and play? I see open plugs there.

Yes. My '12 300XC-w (just like all of them) did not come with a headlight or tail light, so I went to the dealership and bought a new take off head light and tail light for $140 (for both). They plugged right into the loose plugs that you mentioned and work perfect.

What year is your 300 and is a XC or XC-w?

It's a 2012 XC. I assume it must use the same stator?

Only if you want to convert to a DC system. I just did this on my 200 and it gives you many more options (like L.E.D. And H.I.D systems) not to mention accessories like GPS or grip heaters. Enduro Engineering has a plug 'n play AC or DC kit. To convert to DC, you'll need a wiring harness, battery, and regulator / rectifier from trail tech. All together is about $150.
