Clutch problem?

Recommended Posts

I have a 1980 XL 185 that I'm having an acceleration problem with.

Light to moderate acceleration is normal, however, under a heavy load it seems to "slip" as if I pulled in the clutch for a little while, then I feel it bite again and continue on.

If I crack the throttle from an idle, it doesnt sit there and rev up before taking off. It will go until it reaches the rpm range where it normally slips, and once it's past that range it accelerates like normal.

Sorry if I worded that confusing lol

So is this a clutch problem, or transmission?

Several steps:

first make sure yo have some free play at the lever.

If the cable is ok you will also have some slack in the cable down on top of the side case.

After that we are into a worn clutch or engine oil with anti friction additives.

Have you recently change engine oil? and what kind did you use?

I noticed the problem when I bought the bike. Took it home and changed the oil, I used one quart of Yamalube 10-40.

Made a significant improvement, but the problem is still there.
