Fork Pre-Load Spacers?

Recommended Posts

Guys, I apologize if this has been covered, but what is the purpose of using preload spacers on your forks?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Basically the same reason you have preload on your shock

And that reason is to set the sag in an area that is between top out and bottom out, biased towards the top. Way towards the top. It is not to soften or stiffen the springs, although it may feel that way if an extreme is reached. The reason is, if you have too little, you are riding at or near top out, and your tire can't reach down as the bike raises, it tops out too easy, and you feel it when it comes back to earth. If you are using too much, it feels stiff, because it bottoms and/or you get into the stronger part of the progressive curve. Read up on sag for dirtbike suspension, and you'll find methods to set it up.
