Expansion chamber cleaning

I have a couple exhausts for my bike and the previous owner put the old pipe away wet and its rusted but no holes. An SOS pad isn't cutting it. What do you guys use to get the baked on mud and rust off pipes?

A sand blaster does wonders on rust, or maybe even a soda blaster (never used soda myself yet).

I have not had the opportunity to try out soda blasting, but when it comes to exhausts I prefer bead blasting over sand blasting. it leaves a nicer finish for painting and does not take off as much metal.

walnut shells? as in like powder for the blaster?   these things escape me.

I would suggest aluminum foil on the rust. I used it on one of my old FMF fattys and it cleaned up the metal decent. probably follow up with a good round of mothers polish and it'd be good!

He's referring to crushed walnut shells. Walnut shell usage is common in the aviation industry where its mild abrasive properties are used to clean jet engine compressor and turbine blades without damaging any of the expensive parts.
