Cfr50 fuel valve and air filter

Hi. I just picked up an 04 crf50 for my kids that has very little hours on it. The petcock is leaking even when in the off position. Is this a common problem? Is there a better quality fuel valve available or a rebuild kit for the OEM valve? Also it needs a new air filter. The stock one seems pretty cheap. Are the aftermarket filters for the stock air box any better?

I store all my bikes without gas and when I add gas for the first time at the start of the season, it's not uncommon for at least one of the petcocks to leak a little until the seals have had a chance to swell.  After a few hours, the leaking stops.

 

Is the leak from the petcock or from the petcock/tank interface?  There an o-ring that seals the petcock to the tank and that seal is cheap.

No it is leaking from the petcock. I had gas in it for a day and it just kept leaking. Has anyone ever tried to drill out the rivets in the faceplate of he petcock and try and rebuild it?

I'm having the same issue with my sons 2008 crf50. Does the tank need to be removed to replace the petcock valve or can it be done in place?

I think it can be done in place, but life sure would be a lot easier with it off.
