Are the YZ250s now too old....?

Recommended Posts

I was reading a local forum down here in Australia where a few forum members were being a bit derogatory towards our beloved 250's. So after losing lots of sleep with worry & dread I thought I would put up a post here on TT to gauge the true believers responses.

Some of the comments talked about the old ergos, the "fat seat", the too short swing arm, the old frame design which was just a copy of a steel frame, the old design motor (compared to the new euro bikes), the old plastics etc etc. Positive main saviour comment of the YZ is that the SSS forks and the big 18mm shock help the bike. I also notice they are still winning races down here & over there at elite levels so they cant be that bad!

Now I've ridden a couple of the "new" euro bikes and must say the KTM/Berg 300 motor is nice but frame / chassis wise it was vague & twitchy, heavier and no where as nimble as my YZ. I've spent a bucket modding my engine to get it right and love my bike but now Im considering therapy....

Are they that far behind the Euros? Am I flogging a dead horse? Has Yamaha just been complacent or was the YZ that good that they didn't need to change? Help me out TT, you guys all brain washed me into getting one....

Comparing the YZ250 to the KTM250SX the YZ is heavier, has less horsepower, doesn't look as modern, and has barely changed in 8 years.

So on paper yes the KTM would seem to be a better bike.

Personally I love my '13 YZ250 and could care less about what other people say.  The YZ250 is a great bike bottom line.

While it is true that the ktm has seen more changes in the last 8 years, it case so far behind back then that it doesn't mean much. Yes, it has newer plastics and a self adjusting clutch, but the truth is there's not much advantage on the track between the two. The ktm has more power and a better front brake, but for some the YZ is still superior everywhere else.

I have asked many times on forums what made a ktm so much more "evolved" than a YZ to those raving about it. The only arguments, if any, we're about the upgraded looks.

Sherrif re the KTM's; Yep that's what I was thinking. A sleek new look wrapping a frame that has been changed about 5 times in the past 6 years.

Is the basic engine design that the euros favour with the case reed (is that right?) system better?

Better or worse is pretty relative. Better for one is worse for the other The suspension components hold their own pretty well even after 8 years (more like 6 due to internal changes [:)] )

People love to complain about about everything so really if you like your bike who really cares? Me for one I like the fact that the engine is unchanged, that I don't have to worry to get parts just for my bike's year. Changes every year I don't see much benefit. And people who race pro level hardly ride a stock bike anyway.

I went from a KTM 250xc to my yz250 and I couldn't be happier I love the bike and I don't see why there's such a big deal about changing it. Its a great bike and I'm happy as long as Yamaha keeps producing them. I think they are great design and I love being able to open craigslist to find tons of used or new parts. And i love that my bike doesn't change every year to where I feel like my bike is old news...I rode with a KTM guy the other day that said he wished he would have waited another year to buy one just because they change So much.....ever think all that change was needed just to lately come up to par with the "dated" Yz? Hell with it I love it and I'll buy another once mine is clapped the hell out

I went the other way. form an 06 yz250 to an 09 250xc ktm. Big mistake. KTM suspension sucks badly, no matter what I do to it there is no comparison to the yz. I love the plug and play lighting and the electric start but man those forks are killing me.

I am looking to sell my 250f and I have been wanting to go back to a 250smoker... I am going to be buying one new... after reading this i should buy the YZ250? I really have had my head set on a SX250 Orange smoker.

I have no care about what color I ride... I think I have shown that...lol I just want a bike that I can trust and has loads of power :) Most of all I want a 2 stroke again.

Ive ridden a buddy's 2014 ktm250sx and own an 09 yz250, personally i prefer my yz. But the problems i had with the ktm were minimal. Such as i found the suspension wasnt quite on par. But my yz has factory connection suspension and my buddy has it set up for him, a 220lb rider of about the same speed. And i found the ktm was almost too skinny. But then again i am used to my yz.

The pros i had were an great handling bike right out the box, the front brake was awesome, the power was there (felt faster than my yz with a good bit of work done to it) and the hydro clutch was pretty nice.

Overall both the yz and the ktm are great bikes. Really just depends on what bike suits you best IMO

KTM= Depreciating Pile of Dog Turd

Yz= Beautifully crafted piece of Jap Technology.

Sorry, I am just bitter at the moment.   Sold my '11 yz 250 .Bought a 300 xc 2012, got on ok ish with it. Damn It got rough straight away, ver y poor quality materials. Subframes are made of chocolate and wear through!!

I sodl the '12 with 80 hours it looked like it had done 800 hours.Although I tried my best to keep on top of it! Bought a new 2013 xc 300! Sold it after 5 months and 50 hours, lost a bucket load of money! Quality was piss poor!! I will not buy another ktm unless they sort out issues like a jacked airbox plastic rubbing through a chocolate subframe etc etc .

I now have two yz's ,A 09 285 and a 13 250 .They both stand me the same amount of money as one ktm! Couldn't be happier.

KTM's depreciate in value like mad right now in the uk.

The yz is probably slimmer than the KTM. Suspension on yz is miles better! etc etc .. You can  mould the yz however you like it!

I agree. If it aint broke dont fix it.

I like my 03 yz250. I had an 87 250 before it and liked it just as much. Really wish I didn5 sell it.

Pick a bike that you like and stick with it.

I old ergos, the "fat seat", the too short swing arm, the old frame design which was just a copy of a steel frame, the old design motor (compared to the new euro bikes), the old plastics etc etc.

none of that matters to me. I just play around with it in the fields and some trails. I'm not spending 6-8k on a new bike. Id love one though.

A good motor still sucks if the bike handles poorly. ktm has a better motor (when not broken) but its lackluster wp suspension will beat the crap out of you in a long moto

I have not ridden a 250sx since it went to linkage so i cant say myself.

But the yz250 has a great motor, suspension that is so good it still comes on a brand new 2014 250-450f. And it just plain works. My plan is to pick up a 2007+ yz250 and build what Yamaha should have built already

  • fix squish in head (this goes a long way to making up a hp or two it lacks compared to ktm)
  • 2009 yz450f swingarm linkage and rear hub/spokes
  • 22.5 triple clamps
  • newer number plate and front fender.
  • 270 mm rotor (irp)
  • 2007+ cr/crf front master cylinder and brake pads
  • shorten stock silencer to 10 inches

Its the great white shark of mx bikes, it doesn't need to change, it does what its supposed to do perfectly as is.

If the primary question being asked "which bike looks  better"  than yes you have to give props to KTM for keeping the cosmetics current.

If the primary question being asked is "which is a better bike" than IMO it's the YZ hands down, (at least from a gritty hardcore MX standpoint) . I've said before, strip off the plastics and current YZ 2s chassis and suspension technology is NO less than any other current  bike. Those KTM's with thier WP suspensions definitely lack MX capabilities , however in praising KTM's they are the top choice when it comes to enduro . They are also a very high quality built bike, but you also take it right in the a$$ when purchasing replacement OEM parts .

Right there is exactly what the YZ needs. If Yamaha would just do these mods from the factory, they would put the KTM well behind again. I have all of the above mods on my 06 YZ, those are imo most of the very few mods that actually improve the YZ, unlike the MXA article which was mostly nonsense.
