honda 450 9-12 trans part numbers.

The 9 and 10 have the suffix a30 on 3rd and 5h gear on the mainshaft

The 11 and 12 have the suffix a50 3 and 5 on the main shaft.

Does anyone know if they are physically different?

The part number is not superceded.

Seems all others are the same.

However the center shift fork is.

I'm hoping maybe the new part number may have longer dogs.

Don't try to mix and match. Buy the parts for your year bike.

Some gears changed from 3 to 4 or 4 to 3  (I can't remember which way it went) side engagement dogs.

You can use the newer gear sets but you have to replace the whole gear set to do that.

The 9 and 10 have 3 dogs. So the 11 and 12 have 4 dogs

I've been messing with it trying to shim 5 closer to 3 for better engagement but I'm not happy with it you have to move it about 1/2 mile :/ or .040" to get resonable engagement of the dogs. I like .080" better but its a little excessive and 5th gear on the mainshaft starts hangining off 5th on the countershaft.

Stock the dogs only move in .115"

I was hoping maybe the newer parts just dogged in deeper.

Are you saying you don't think just using the 3 and 5 mainshaft gears won't work with the 09s 3 and 5 countershaft gears?

So it looks like I'm going to shim it over .040" and face .040" off of the front of 5th gear on the lathe.

I'm hope this in combination with the x detent spring and using the clutch when possible will keep me out of the bottom end of this bike for a while :/
