From 20w50 to 10w40

I changed from 20w50 to 10w40 and now I see some light smoke out the tailpipe.  It's a 94 XR250L and it consumes oil but I could not see it with 20w50.  Is it because it is a lighter oil?  The 10w40 is definitely darker then the 20w50.

That's funny my 1991 XR250L did the opposite kind of. Mine smoked on startup with 20w50 but does not on 10w40. Does it smoke all the time?

Ya but it's really light.  I only noticed it when I was riding in the dark and stopped over a street light.

wait until the summer and out some straight 30 or 40 weight --- that will fix her right up.

I would run the 20w50.  If it gets so cold that it becomes difficult to kick-start the bike because the oil is too thick, then change to a lighter oil.

 

You could try a 15w50.  

 

When it's cold, let the oil warm-up real good at idle before you rev the engine.  Otherwise you might cavitate at the pump.
