400 street price

Hi. I've been looking on CL for a low mile 400. What should be the low and high price for these machines?

I'm seeing sellers asking 2500 to 3000 for a good looking ones. Ones less than 2000 are ghetto looking.

That's pretty high. Around me they can be had for $1400-$2200, depending on condition.

I had my spotless, low mileage 03 for sale on CL for 6 months asking $2200 and never even got a call, much less a look.

Sounds about right.   More in CA if they are plated.

 

If you look for a while, you will find a great deal on a mint XR400.  

Also, you will find roached out XR400's that belong in the scrap heap for more than the mint XR400.

 

Do some research.  When I have searched for bikes over a few months, I have found some great deals, as it 3 bikes that were nearly new at great prices.

In my part of CA there are a few from $2200-$2500...none plated. I've seen em for around $1700...but they go fast at that price.

I looked a while back and couldn't find a decent ca street legal 400 for under $3000. Ended up getting my brother in laws for $2600 and it's in great condition (he got a new ktm 500exc). I wouldn't let it go for less then $3000 though, heak I probably wouldn't even do $4000. To me it's to valuable. That's the problem, people don't want to let nice ca street legal xr4's go for cheap. All in all, I would say the ca range for a nice street legal xr4 would be $2500 - $3200.

I was looking for 2 months,same thing. The nice was were ridiculously priced. The $1200-&1800 were mostly ragged out. I found one for $2500 when I went to look at it he couldn't get it started. The bike was clean, compression felt good. The problem was when he turned on the petcock gas would flow through the carb bowl overflow... I made him an offer of $1500. Had some extras, Clarke tank 50t sprocket and extra chain, ache ribs hand guards, and a nice rock plate. And it was plated. He accepted the offer. I took it home pulled the carb. Cleared the rotted rubber bits from the petcock that came through the fuel line and were holding the float valve open. Two kicks and it fired up. Now I have a nice, great running '03 XR400R in Northeast Ohio :-)

Just curious...  Can a bike plated in another state be transferred to CA and get a plate there? 

This has no relevance to me, as I'm on the other side of the country.  Just curious.

The answer is probably not.   I don't say no as weird things happen and there are some loop holes people fall through.

 

When a motorcycle is registered, the DMV looks for the "Emissions sticker".   If one is not found they write it on the form and send it in.  They check the VIN for motorcycles that comply and don't comply.  

 

Used vehicles are suppose to have 7500 miles on them before being imported to CA.   This is to avoid people buying in Oregon, NV, or AZ; with 49 state smog equipment, then bringing them in.   However, I think a "50 state" vehicle can be bought out of state.   Almost everything is illegal here and there are a million laws.

Location and demand for them play a big part on price. A plate adds a LOT in Cali but not so much in other states where it's easy to plate in the 1st place.

Nothing wrong with Ted, yet there are plenty of problems with CA and its endless restrictions. Nothing bankruptcy won't cure I guess.

I lived in Nevada in 1981-1983, I miss they way the state was run. If it is illegal, don't do it. You will go to jail if caught. A lot fewer laws compared to California.

I liked the old quote in Dirt Bike magazine that went something like this:

In most states, if you don't do something that will get you on the front page of the newspaper, no one really cares. In California, almost every act or object is illegal due to one law or another. We have become acustom to being inviolation one law or another all of the time. We just accept the fact and pay the fine if it our turn to be cited.
