Trail maintenance kit - what should I carry on the bike?

Recommended Posts

Excellent thread for the newbie that I am! :-)

Dumb question: For the 2-stroke riders here, how do you deal with refueling? Do you simply carry oil and mix it at the pump or do you carry a certain amout of premix with you?

Sorry, don't mean to hack the thread, I felt it was relevant. :-)

If I need extra gas I carry gatorade bottles with premixed fuel in them. two 64oz bottles fit well in a bigger camelbak.

If you are really going far and can get to a gas station I would carry oil in a measuring container like this

I use these bags: http://www.wolfmanluggage.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_id=74

I also wear a small backpack with the big hydration pouch.

I used to carry everything in a backpack, but the saddle bags are so much better. Can't even tell they are there.

Tubes (front and back)

patch kit

small air canister thingys

multitool and sockets

med kit

radio

tire irons (small ones)

wire

zip ties

pliers

Like others have said, if you tear your bike down in your shop/garage/living room, bring that stuff.

I have only needed any of it once or twice, but being that 99% of our rides are +50miles, I would hate to push my bike home.

Its nice, cause my jacket will fit in it if need be.

Even with all the stuff I carry, I can tighten them down pretty compact.

Only time I have ever noticed them was when I first got them, I caught my boot on a loose strap and bailed while getting on the bike.

As far as gas goes, I can carry a few of the big gatrorade bottles in them. Or if we are planning a multiday trip, I will just bring small things of pre-mix, already measured for the 4ish gallons my tank is.

RE Pocket chain saws - I saw someone else had that on their list. There are some interesting heavy duty ones if you search for them. I have one of the cheap ones you get at chain stores - it's like barbed wire with rings.

I usually bring a sub set of this list and cut it down if a riding buddy already has the item.

Things like a master link can be critical 20 miles away near dusk.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry this thread is out of order I meant to quote zotis777 at the bottom of the first page. I wouldn't dump the oil straight into your bikes tank.  Iv'e had bad luck with fouling plugs bad that way.  The oil seems to sink straight down into the carb before it has a chance to mix.  It happened to me once when I forgot my gas tank and tried to mix it right at the pump.  A guy saw me at the trail trying to start my bike and he asked if I mixed it in the tank-oops!(same thing happened to him).  I have seen people bring extra pre-mix in water bottles straped to the front fender/number plate for long rides.  Or get a bigger tank.  You might be surprised how long you can get out of your stock one though, I used to go 50 miles on my yz with it's 2 gal on not totally run out!

Thats cause nobody rides with bars that have crossbars anymore.

So you have never seen a bike with fat bars that uses the big foam rectangle pad on them huh? Covers the bar clamps. Just cause you don't use one, hardly means nobody does.

Something that seldom gets mentioned, is ways to make a fire. I carry a bic lighter and a mag fire stick.

On 1 club ride in the Black Rock desert, 40 miles in my CR500 siezed. It was gunna take hrs for the rescue truck. So, I made myself comfortable, and built a fire. It was o dark 30 when they made the rescue. But it was a beautiful night in the desert.

No worriess, just tryin to understand.

You caught me!! Haha. Actually for me it is a crossbar pad as I run Flexx bars. I know most guys run typical fat bars but the cubby hole made under the cover will work regardless of where that foam piece rides. Cheers.
