How to know if your too rich or lean?

My 96 yz 250 was does not idle and when I was riding it it Boggs out. Revving it, the top end is crisp. When I was riding it it would bog and I had the throttle wide open, then at a random time the power band would kick in and it would lift up and sound good. I lowered the clip in the needle ( thus giving it more fuel ) and it cleared up the bottom end a bit and it runs better. Any tips for jetting and needle size and position? It sounds and feels like this 250 should have more power.

Bogging means too lean and sputtering like cracking means too rich and go read a jetting guide for the needle, main jet, pilot jet ect for how to set them

No problem also check your carb float height that can also be a problem :) have fun

If you are too rich, you buy what you want, not what you need.

If you are too lean, you have to put extra holes in your belt.

It's really simple: too lean, and your power will stop like a kill button.

too rich and it will sound like it's drowning.

These are of course, the extremes.

If you are too rich there be a lot of exhaust coming out of your pipe and if it is too lean it would bog down.
