I bet you can make the trade without offering cash. Tell him you'll only trade if its a straight trade and see if he'll agree after he gets the impression you're serious.

Look up the nadaguides and the kbb price info for your zip code.  Seems like it is right in the range or maybe a heck of a deal.  here is what I saw for my zip code:

KBB:

2006 CRF80F      $1030 retail  $620 trade-in

2008 TTR125LE  $1290 retail  $810 trade in

net difference $260 retail  $210 trade-in

NADA:

2006 CRF80F  $770 avg retail  $585 low retail

2008 TTR125LE  $1250 avg retail  $950 low retail

net difference  $480 avg retail  $365 low retail

NADA tells you that $300 diff is a bargain and the market (at least for my zip code) says its worth more than $300 over the CRF80F.  KBB says its in the ballpark.  All this assumes equal condition.

I would say he is not off the mark.  I have owned CRF80F, CRF100F, CRF150F, KX100, WR250F, KDX200 for my kids.  I have not owned the Yamaha TTR125LE.  But, based on my experience, the price difference is about right.

Now that is some real help!

well I did the trade with 150 for me. its a clean bike and its in better shape than the 80 was so I feel it was a fair deal

he doesn't know about it yet. they are getting their bikes for Christmas this year.

I got to surprise my son at Christmas last year with a KLX 110, it was awesome. Congrats to you and your boy, it's going to be a big Christmas at your house!
