seal question

Hey all,

 

  I have two questions.  First is I believe the water propeller seal was installed backwards (by someone other then me.)  The cup for the seal is pointing towards the water propeller and I believe it should face towards the bearing.  I pulled the seal and left it up the way I found it for the picture.  As stated I believe it should be turned 180 degrees around.

The second question is in regards to the countershaft seal.  I have had a leak since day one coming from this seal.  When pulled it was not inserted 1mm from the lip (per Honda's directions) instead it was installed flush with the case.  When I removed this seal I noticed that it appears the lip of a previous seal was still inside the grove of where it is installed.  Very hard to see.  I tried to use a pick to help remove it but all I was doing was creating a small scratch between the case wall and this lip (very small area.)  Any ideas or tips to remove the remains of the old seal?  When the bearing comes out will there be access, is there a chemical that will dissolve rubber and not hurt aluminum?  If you can see anything please see picture of this.  Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

Didnt catch the year if you mentioned it, but my 02 250 has the seal as yours is pictured. I just checked the manual, it it shows it being installed like this also.

 

As for the remaining seal piece, perhaps a small eyeglass ( flat head..or any other super small tipped ) screwdriver will reach down in there to lift it out.

Oh good to hear that, that seal was installed correctly, I will go ahead and install the new one the same way.  As far as the half stuck seal, I realized that there is not a grove at all.  I was able to pry out the whole thing.  Which is good news.  Now on to the bad news.  I created a few scratches, and I think the previous owner created a few more then me.  Here is the picture.  I have no idea if this will hold oil without leaking.  Is there anything that can be done?  Gasket sealer?  a little JB weld? Just install the new seal and keep my fingers crossed there is not a leak?  Here are two pictures, I know they are hard to see!

Oh good to hear that, that seal was installed correctly, I will go ahead and install the new one the same way.  As far as the half stuck seal, I realized that there is not a grove at all.  I was able to pry out the whole thing.  Which is good news.  Now on to the bad news.  I created a few scratches, and I think the previous owner created a few more then me.  Here is the picture.  I have no idea if this will hold oil without leaking.  Is there anything that can be done?  Gasket sealer?  a little JB weld? If not really deep at all, I'd just press a seal in it. If its deep I'd coat that area with yamabond or hondabond and press the seal in while the sealer is wet. It should be fine.
