KLX/Drz400 clutch slipping..

Hello Thumper Talk.. I have a KLX 400.. I rode some steep trails and shortly thereafter my clutch started slipping.. I let it cool off and it still slips.. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ok , how many miles on the clutch ?

Do you have some free play at the clutch lever ?

What type of oil do you use ?

Not a stone trapped behind the arm above the front sprocket?? Very common and annoying!

The clutch and bike have about 3000 miles.. I'll check the front sprocket.. I haven't put enough miles on it to change the oil yet. Thanks for the input

The recommended oil changes are 1000 miles ... Oil and filter

Make sure you use a motorcycle specific oil.  Some oils intended for cars have friction modifiers in them that can cause the clutch to slip. 3000 miles between oil changes is a long time.  Even though the manual calls for intervals like that most on the forum will change at 1000 miles or less depending on riding conditions.

I've only put about 400 miles on the bike.. It has 3000 total. Sorry for the confusion.. I'll change the oil and see what happens..

There is a oil screen located at the base of the frame down tube ( where you pour the oil in ) . Give it a clean .

Not as part of the clutch slipping diagnosis or repair right??

 

Just a once a year, after engine open maintenance cleaning of the frame tank screen ..

No , nothing to do with clutch operation .

The recommendation of oil frame screen cleaning is based on periodic maintenance only , the recommendation that was mentioned is based only on the OP's knowledge of the existence of the oil screen ... In question .
