Just Another Gearing Question

I have a 2000 KTM SX and I have been mainly using it for on road use. I know most of you are going to disagree with using a two stroke as a road bike but hey I'm just using what I got! Anyway, I got it with a 14t sprocket in the front and a 49t sprocket in the rear. What would you guys suggest for gearing? I ride it 80% on-road and 20% off-road. I'm usually going a maximum speed of 45 mph and with my current gearing I feel like I'm just asking for my motor to seize. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 04 KTM 125 and I am at that point of spending money, need a chain and rear sprocket.

I have 13-50

I also would like a bit more cruising speed

So yes looking for input from other riders.

I do like the gearing I have now for slow riding

trails, cruising, but when you need to get to 80

in a hurry and maybe stay there a few seconds

it is nice not to worry about locking up a screaming

Find a rear that will work for you in both situations.


On my 02 300, I run a 52 rear and change my CS to suit my needs. I dont run street, but everything from extreme singletrack to high desert. So I adjust my CS to what Im doing. 13, 14 or 15. 


If you are running a clutch slave guard, 14 is the highest you can go.


Maybe get a spare wheel that you can change out with higher gearing and a better street tire.
