My XR650L

 I sold my Ninja ZX10R and just couldn't go without a bike. My brother used to own a Suzuki XR400 and I really enjoyed riding that bike. I decided I wanted a dual sport bike. I wanted a bike that could be a lot of fun trail riding on the weekend\s, but also wanted to use it to commute 45 minutes each way to work and back a few days a week if I chose. I never owned a dirt bike or a dual sport before. Ive ridden street bikes and quads for quite a while, so the trail riding is kinda new to me.

 

I've owned the bike for about 2 months now. I have so much more fun on this thing than I ever had with the ninja, even on the streets. I rode her completely stock for about 2 weeks. Then removed the smog crap.I also installed powermadd's bar risers and a new set of folding mirrors. Last weekend I installed an FMF Q4 slip on, a Uni Filter and did "Dave's" mods to the carb. Well, I used the dyna jet kit jets, and lighter spring for the slide. But I also drilled the holes in the slide, and removed the snorkel from the air box. Also, I added a Clarke tank because I got tired of re-fueling everyday I took it to work. And since the stock rear tire was almost a slick, I put a dunlop D606 on the rear wheel.

 

Anyone that owns a XR650L, I highly recommend un corking it. I knew from reading that it made a pretty big difference in performance. I was not prepared for how much better this thing runs.

 

I'll be hitting the trails this weekend to test the new tire, it's gotta be better than the stock tire. I'll probably be putting an MT21 on the front, from what I read the D606 front is not really good for riding in the loose stuff.

 

The next mods are a skid plate, frame supports and new hand guards. I also need to decide on what bags I want to put on it. I feel the need to carry a decent tool kit and spare tubes. Here's a pic of what she looks like at the moment.

good to hear, can't beat the DS fun factor, the xr650l is long time participant.

checkout giant loop for packing your stuff, perfect for a dualsport, imo.

 

a Suzuki XR400, would be a interesting hybrid......

MT21 front would be a good choice for a DOT tire. If you do not have to get regular equipment inspections, just buy whatever knobbie works best in your area and don't sweat the DOT approved thing. Just my 2 cents but I feel much safer on pavement with an all dirt knobbie than I do on dirt with a street biased tire. MT21 is about dead in the middle, OK on dirt and OK on street.

I've been wanting to do more street and lately and was considering a used 650L as a budget adventure bike. I just can't afford the KTM adventures and BMW's. I want more dirt and less highway in my adventures than those bikes are made for anyway. The BRP is about the right mix. Have fun with it!!

Sounds like you're on the right track. I'd keep it quiet though. After running 606's f&r I am trying the MT21's and first impressions are very favorable for the front. KLR650, mostly dirt. The 606 rear is tits, have to see if the MT21 is it's equal.

your bike looks great. I have 2006 I bought new, only 750 miles on it. I have a couple of questions, what size is your Clark tank? what about  petcocks? are there two? what make and model of front fender? my main woods bike is a crf450x, and I ride vintage trials on a 1974 Yamaha ty250.

IT's a 4.7 gallon Clarke tank. The front fender is stock. I just trimmed it a bit.
