Found this in my old jet kit papers!

Drz S/SM is listed to 40hp at the cranck ,E-model 48 hp

Drilling for the slide is an old trick. Don't think it does much on the Drz,

but works on other bikes for a "snappier" throttle responce

why does everyone say 32hp? . Not sure why jd dont mention it

It depends on where you measure HP.  If its measured at the crank there are no friction losses from the drive train.  If its measured at the rear wheel drive train friction losses result in a lower HP number.  This was an old trick the car makers used to do when making horsepower claims.  They would do their measurements on motors that were not turning a steering pump, alternator, radiator fan, A/C, drive train, and etc. in an effort to post the highest HP numbers.  In reality its how much of that HP that makes it to the rear wheel is what's important.

I've drilled a bunch of slides. But only ones that required it in the jet kit. A jet kit that requires you to drill, usually includes the proper sized drill bit and instructions on placement of the hole. Another old trick is cutting about 20mm or so off of the slide spring to aid in quicker throttle response. Pretty common with older multi carb bikes. Never found a reason to cut the spring on the drz carb. Plus, it can be risky business if you don't get it right, because the spring could then kink and hold it open. Upgrade to the fcr and you'll never look back. Haha
