California CR500AF Build Thread

[Cube Steak]

First we start with a well built CR500AF
 

 
Add a modern head light...  Ebay/Chinese knockoff of the newer Hondas.
 

 

Needs a Euro Tail for the brake light and plate.

 

Gotta have a kickstand right...

 

 

Cool...  done...  I thought these things were supposed t be a lot of work to build...  guess not.  ?

Don't forget balancing the crank, adding flex or composite bars, a lower compression piston, a compression release blow-off valve on the head, and  a PWK airstriker carb.

Then it will vibrate much less, start easier, and have throttle response.

 

Just sayin.

All I did on my '89 CR500 was unload it, kick start it, tear the shit out of the sand dunes. Never did ride it in the desert though.

If that is not a Service Honda then that is NOT a CR500AF, it's just a CR or CRF frame with a CR500 engine stuffed into it.

I have owned and ridden a CR500 in a CR250 frame since 2004.

It was not a hard conversion, especially if you have access to a machine shop and 

someone that tig welds.

PWK39.5mm, shaved and re-shaped head, shaved cylinder, ported (Eric Gorr).

All the usual other stuff, V Force reeds,etc etc etc.

Rode it in the woods all the time.

Vibrate - yes.  Do you get used to it - yes.

Was it fast - yes.  It would go anywhere.

But - it does not have a plate.

So - I don't ride it much now - 

But when you have the itch - it is there.

Yep, Mark Harms, the owner of Sand Tires Unlimited was the guy that came up with the idea of the bike.  He and a few buddies got together and made a few of them.  One was even a KX500.  I bought mine from one of his buddies.  When I needed a new tire, I called Mark and went down to his shop in Temecula and watched him grove down the tractor tire.

 

True story, sitting at the bottom of China Wall, watching a guy ride the crest of the wall going left to right.  Could see the bike had a big front tire so I chased after him.  Was one of Mark's buddies.  This was after I bought the bike but before I met Mark.  His buddy followed me back to my camp so he knew where we were staying.  They all came by the next morning and 5 of us, all on 500's with the big tractor tires, took off on a SSS ride (if you can call it that in Glamis).  Never had been North of the 78
