DRZ400S initial build, a better bike out there?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I've been lurking on these forums for a while soaking up as much info I possibly can about the DRZ400: I'm 99.99% sure it is the bike I want. That being said, I have some questions regarding aftermarket modifications vs. a better purchase for the money.

As I understand it, at least in California, I will save money on insurance with an S model over the SM, over the years this will add up to quite a lot.

The SM conversion will be held off for a while. I'd like to do some adventure/enduro riding and the conversion can get extremely pricey if I need to get new rotors etc. Ideally I'd be able to trade wheels with someone (wishful thinking?)

I left off the MRD/SSW: I'd like to stay close to stock (drilled out S exhaust), but are the performance benefits of an aftermarket full system worth their cost?

Is there a more suitable all around bike for the extra money? I know this requires a somewhat subjective answer, but honestly that's kind of what I'm looking for: what do you think?

My riding: I'll be using it as a commuter during the week, but doing a lot of trail exploring on the weekends. After the SM conversion I'll be hitting up the twistys. It will be my only vehicle.

$1,900 doesn't seem that bad to me, I'll be able to do all these mods within the first 7-8 months of getting the bike, but I am very curious to hear other thoughts on this.

Here's the breakdown:

No. 1, if i had the cash and there was a drz400s in great shape for 1900 bucks i would jump all over that ! i think its one of the best dualsport bikes , the 250 are wimpy and the 650s are way too heavy... drz400s great choice

No 2. did you just say your going to buy a drz carb, hot cams, heated grips, skid plate BUT YOUR GONNA KEEP THE EXHAUST STOCK AND DRILL HOLES IN IT ?! thats crazy talk bro...

No 3. do all the simple mods like airbox mod, exhaust system like a fmf Q4 slip on, jets, air filter, etc... then if you really need more power buy the drz carb, hotcams stage 5 if they make them, why not buy a athena 440cc big bore kit and nitro !

Alright thanks for the info, then I guess the MRD/SSW is the way to go! That adds another $459 to the aftermarket upgrades.

I would jump all over it too if a DRZ showed up for $1900 in my area, unfortunately these are the closest:

The 2nd one is asking too much, and the first looks like it might have been ridden a bit too hard... lol.

the first ones not too bad for the price. Second ones a little older but better shape, either get the first one for 2k or the second for 2500. I'd say first.

The SSW system is the best choice for the DRZ

Aren't you forgetting something about suspension on 2000-2002 models S?  :)

I'd buy the first one

I found a plated 2004 E model.

What do you think? I texted the guy and he says:

1) He bought a 2001 DRZ400S frame from a guy in Santa Cruz

2) He swapped everything from a 2004 DRZ400E to the S frame

3) He registered the bike this year

4) He only welded mounts for the tank on one side, but says he's had it off road with no problems. Can anyone elaborte?

What do you think? $2900 seems steep.
