Install of Racetech Shock Spring

i have installed my new racetech shock spring, but without the collar.

 

i am not sure if i need this collar or not, what it's use is and where it should be located.

 

can someone please advise their thoughts on this.

It stops the spring from rubbing on the shock body I believe.  It goes on the top so the thread doesn't wear away.  Also are you going to lock that lock nut down?  The spring may rotate and undo your preload collar.

aren't these Spring Adapter Collars to bush the spring down to the size of the shock collars ID to ensure a proper fit?

 

if so, how do i know if i need to use it?

Yes. If the spring id is too large it may rub on the shock body. Use it if the id is larger than the stock spring id. Either measure it or just judge it for yourself.

And yes sorry you need to remove the spring to install. The lip goes inside the spring.

Collar is mandatory unless you wish to buy another shock soon.

I'm three years late but thanks for the info. All the years I've ridden I should know this but it must of leaked out somewhere at Carnegie or Hollister.
