400S tailight piece / rear blinkers mod options?

are there other options for modifying the stock tailight piece/rear blinker set up on the 400S besides these two I know about: 1) Installing the UFO dual sport tailight/blinker set up or 2.) saw cutting off the bottom half of the stock taillight piece below the license plate top bolts?

both options are done by multiple DR-Z400S owners. I have seen both and both are okay mods, but I may want to be different and I am looking for other options.

my thoughts going in are: I do like the stock rear blinkers. The length of the stock tailpiece is a bit ugly but not a nusiance and yeah the tailight is big, but I like the safety aspect of the large stock set up at night on the street........ so I'm not in hurry to buy the UFO tailpiece, but I would buy it before I would saw cut my stock one. I just want to evaluate some other options too. any ideas?

I did it this way

I realy like it. its looks good and realy durable

I had turn signals also but took them off.

That's how I mount the licence plate.

Another option is to get a UK tail-light, it looks so much better.

Sorry i haven't got a pic of one

OK, I'm just about to drop the coin for the UFO setup, but this UK tailight has my interest....Where can you get it, and does anyone have some pics???

I used a couple LED strips from customdynamics.com for the tail light and the turn signals are mounted up near where the side panel and rear fender meet....

:)

now we're talking. that set up looks creative and small

mine is like this but with the stock tail light, and less metal under the license plate. my dad made mine with some metal a plasma torch, a grinder and a drill.

Bob, keep in mind that you need to stay as legal as possible. The ufo brake light is D.O.T. legal however the turn signals are not. I took the bike for my DMV test, and they checked the operation of the turn signal, and didn't say anything about the fact that they are technically too close together.

yes i understand that the distance required is 9 " from a previous post that linked us to the DMV's specific requirements web page. Ya know that UFO looks about 9" to the outside of the blinkers I wonder if the requirement is centerline to center line

no matter My point is I like my blinkers as they are - I guess I should look for a small tailight only replacement piece with a plate bracket and keep my blinkers, that is maybe where I'm headed with this.

The UFO is not for "looks", it is to keep from constantly tearing off the stalks and/or smashing the lenses or signal bodies from crashes if you do a lot of woods/rocks riding.

If you like the stock blinkers there is no need to do anything. A lot of mods are DOT registered but not DOT approved, just matters how strict the inspection stations are in your state.

To see a "non North American" DRZ taillight visit suzuki germany, Austria, Switzerland or Japan. You will see a tail light that follows the curve of the top of the fender rather than the giant refrigerator size box US Suzuki calls a tail light. For example the DRZ400 Super Motard shown at the recent Tokyo auto/bike show has the tail light. By the way it is illegal because SAE or DOT are not molded into the plastic....but noone will ever notice or check. A friend bought one for me in Austria while on vacation...$80. Bolts on, plugs in...no problem.

I thought my "hack the stock light and install some EMGO flushmount marker lights" was cool. BUT what GCVT has done takes it the next level!!! :worthy:I'm going to start on mine right now :):D

I will sell someone mine. I got pulled over for them so I had to go stock :)

PM if you want. Paypal only

DRZ TAIL LIGHT You can barely see it in this photo, but I got this little tail light and license plate bracket from Four Strokes Only. No turn signals, but I have seen others hook up turn sinals with this set up.

Hey mike - which tailight exactly did you order from them - they list quite a few of them. And also - does it light up the plate enough to see it at night????

Thanks :):D

That looks like the light I used to have on my bike before I went with the LED strips. If I'm not mistaken, it's number 11 on this page. It has no license plate light at all. I got rid of mine because the bulbs kept breaking - I went through bulbs like crazy...about one every month, if not more. The bulbs are very tiny and the housing is too small to install one of those retrofit LED bulbs.

Here's what mine used to look like:

Hi Bob, We will cure you of the liking the stock blinkers pretty quickly :D. When we get you up to Downieville the stock "breakers' will go I promise :). I am surprised they are still in one piece for you.

no matter My point is I like my blinkers as they are

I recommend this tail section modification for Christmas time...

I ordered the UFO tail section in September and am still wating on it. :D:):D

Hey GCVT do you use any signal lights? :)

Yep. If you scroll up to my last post you can just barely see the orange lens of the left one...the right one is harder to see but it's right above the pipe. They are mounted to the subframe up near where the side panels meet the rear fender. The are Lockhart-Phillips short stalk IV lights - pictured here:

I have the black ones with the smoke lenses. :D
