Changing oil first time 2014 520

Hey guys, ran a couple of hours, wanted to change oil. Gear oil came out milky white, looks like tan paint. Something wrong or normal? Thanks!

No that is not normal.  That looks like a water and oil emulsion so you might have a coolant leak or water got in there another way.  Perhaps the water pump shaft.

 

Any evidence of loss of coolant?

How many hours on the bike? I can't imagine a water pump failure that bad. Did you do some water crossings?

As cleo said, check water level in radiator. Also check simple stuff like breather hoses.

 

When you get it sorted out and diagnosed, flush it out a few times using diesel fuel and running through the gears. You can flush it with oil, but it will not disperse the water as well as diesel.

Less than 2 hours. No visible loss of coolant.

Also no river crossings. Mostly on road and gravel. Also, the engine drain plug took all my strength to loosen. Literally as hard as I could before it broke loose.

I take that back, rode through 2 inches of water that was about 20 feet long. Hardly a river but I'm looking at everything since no coolant is gone.

What about washing your bike? Is it your first oil change?

 

Let that oil set overnight and see if it is in fact water.

Yes I did wash the bike. The same as I have for 25 years, nothing weird.

I have had the same thing on my 450, just buy a few litres of inexpensive oil (if there is such a thing change the oil out a few times),  and do a few oil changes and it will clear. I moved the gear box vent hose up under the seat as a precaution, It will take a few flushes but I bet it will go away. My oil was tan grey.

Could be a faulty (or incorrectly installed) water pump shaft seal....it happens.

 

Or water got in through the tranny beather/vent hose.

 

Both are inexpensive and easy to fix.

Ahhh, Now I remember. I had a weird looking gear oil change when I first got the bike. Kind of a tan grey color too! Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but when I removed all the smog crap, oil changes came out normal.
