Big bore + cams

Recommended Posts

My 01 E model is definitely due for a major service and i'm sure that the cam chain will need replacing and the valves shimmed among the other regular bits to get done so it's got me thinking about going big bore and upgrading the cams.

I wanna get some opinions on my thoughts and the below upgrade kit

I've found this on ebay among a few others, I've linked this one as it has  JE piston which seems favourable based on everything i've read.

Up to you, but I have read too many things here to get anything with the name Namura on it. The piston is top notch for sure, but the actual cylinder..... :excuseme:

Have you looked for a Cylinder Works kit with cams too? That company is where I got mine, Apex, and it was only the BigBore kit itself with a Vertex piston (similar in quality to JE), but I can remember seeing more offered, I just wasn't interested at the time.

I thought Namura was the coating but I see now that its Nikasil i saw thinking of.

I might get the motor serviced as is and do this big bore down the track. the E has plenty of poke to keep me occupied for a while longer i guess.

Didn't mean to dissuade you, because by all means go for the BB kit.....you have a 2001 E model which has pretty good cams already, I wouldn't spend the money for very minimal gains getting Hot Cams, but the BB kit will definitely add some grunt......the extra cc's mean a lot in the down low power. Couple that with your FCR should give you some noticeable power changes. You don't mention exhaust.....what are you running?

If it was me, I would do the big bore only, no cams.

The E model already has aggressive cams in it from the factory. IIRC the Hot Cam intake cam is slightly more aggressive than the E intake cam, and the E exhaust cam is slightly more aggressive than the Hot Cam exhaust cam. Both E model cams and Hot Cam cams are more aggressive than S/SM model cams.

Seems I saw this just the other day for only $429 or so on Ebay........he should check around though.

Gbren , the boys are right , save your money and get the CW big bore , you dont need cams . I cannot see the spec for the hotcams on the ebay sight , but the only ones you should consider would be the older stage 2 hotcam . ( the newer version are the same as an E , give or take ) If you dont have one , an MRD/SSW exhaust would compliment the package . With the big bore and pipe you can get almost 50 hp out of your bike , but one major thing you should do is check out the main bearings . A lot of people have spent some big cash upgrading there older motors only to see them go bang due to worn out cranks , greg

Remember to get your valves inspected....If your valve clearances are moving there would be a good chance that your valves are due for replacement...

+99 on Cylinder Works BB kit ......

You could just install the Hot Cams Stage II Intake and leave the E model Ex cam for another small gain...

.E CAMS......... IN .351 lift 227 dur.... EX .366 lift 243 dur

HC stage 2.... IN .358 lift 238 dur..... EX .358 lift 238 dur

My other girl is extremely low maintenance so the bikes get heaps of love!

Thanks for all the responses, CW big bore added to the list of fun.

Fcr-mx with bb kit and the mrd is being built as speak, my future looks to be on the back wheel :D

OP original post

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231190733204?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT $649.95 + Shipping $79.95 = $729.90

Hot Cams

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suzuki-Stage-2-DRZ400-DRZ-400-Hotcam-both-intake-exhaust-cam-2251-2IN-2252-2E-/321382316824?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item4ad3e0fb18$269.95 + Shipping $ 48.95 = $318.90

CW BB KIt

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CYLINDER-WORKS-BIG-BORE-KIT-434cc-SUZUKI-DRZ400-DRZ-400-E-K-S-SM-2000-2014-/221420128625?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item338dab0971$409.95, free shipping + $318.90 = $728.85

So my bad, it's not $30 at all, for the same money less a $1 the OP can get a CW BB kit and Hot Cams for the same price as the Namura /Hot Cams kit.

Feel free to correct my maths,

Edit, I just realised the OP is in Australia and not eligible for free shipping, in which case he should email the seller for a price on shipping multiple items as he had mentioned a cam chain as well.

$410 is still a good price for a CW BB kit, just sucks getting it to Australia.

Note to OP, it might be worth making a list of what you need and email both the ebay seller and the TT store, if you buy all you need from one seller, they should be able to do you a deal on the shipping.
