Honestly, you're on a trail/play bike.  Leave it stock and enjoy it as is and save your $$$ for an upgrade to a more performance oriented bike like a CRF250X when you're ready.

First upgrade is to jet it correctly, cheap and easy. Search for Mike Coe jetting specs, really brings these bikes alive. Then you will realize how crappy the suspension is, that gets a little more expensive. Depends on which way you go with it as to how expensive. The 230 is an excellent trail bike once messagesd a little bit. If you were wanting to race motocross I would say upgrade. Yet on the trails it's hard to beat its' tractor like qualities.

  • 48 pilot
  • 120 main
  • 2003-2005 needle
  • 2003-2005 idle mixture screw
  • Remove intake restrictor
  • Remove exhaust baffle
  • One BBR fork spring

Start there and see if you like the bike.  If you don't like it sell it.  If you do like it move on to the next suspension upgrades.

Where are you located and how much do you weigh?

If you add compression and jetting it will run so much better that your suspension will have to be upgraded or you will not be able utilize your new found power.

Front and rear suspension upgrades with added compression and proper jetting, IMO, would be your best bang for your buck.

To change the jet do you need a new exhaust?

Nope just do what Vortec said and pull the baffle out of the stock exhaust and the snorkel out of the airbox.  Easy peasy.
