Need help with 2005 RM85 Clutch question

Recommended Posts

I was doing maintenance on my son's 2005 RM85 and noticed a possible problem with the clutch, note that this is the first time I have looked at the clutch on this bike so I'm wondering if what I am seeing is normal.  The "Clutch Sleeve Hub" as they call it in the repair manual has a warble to it, that is to say, it can be pushed side to side a bit in addition to rotating.  The warble is about 2mm.  It looks like the hub itself has a 'quarter dollar' sized piece in the center where it mounts to the shaft that is separate from the rest of the hub.  The warble is happening between that center piece and the rest of the hub. To be specific, on this page, it is item #5 (http://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/suz/508b2298f870023530724216/clutch) and I'm wondering if the warble is normal or if I should replace the hub.  The symptom I was having that prompted the inspection of the clutch was that when trying to kick-start the bike in gear with the clutch engaged the bike lurched forward a bit as though it was not fully engaged.  The clutch plates themselves measured within the servicable tolerance.

Thanks,

Jon

The lateral play of that hub is not normal. It seems like the bearing for the hub may be worn out or damaged, letting it move back and forth.

The bearing is #4 on this partsfische: http://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/suz/508b2298f870023530724216/clutch

Is the hub and/or basket grooved heavily from the clutch plate movement? A dragging clutch is often due to these. You may be in need of replacement of the clutch as a whole if either of those are worn.
