02R Cam in 07 450X

Recommended Posts

I have searched the 02R cam and I am very keen on putting it in my as part of my top end rebuild but can't find the answer I need.

My question is will I have to replace the cam tower, the decomp setup or anything else to suit the 02r cam?

I have seen that the 08 needed other parts and that it may have changed sometime in 07?

My bike is an Australian March 07 model.

Sorry for starting another thread on on this topic, I have searched but couldn't find the answer.

Pics included if that helps.

Thanks in advance,

Ryan.

A 02 R Cam will fit into your existing cam tower

So just drop it in and I'm good to go?

Yes....you are good to go after checking valve cam timing and shim the valve clearances!

Thanks for the feedback, I will be replacing the whole valve setup with KW, new cam chain/tensioner, looking into a TRX JE forged piston and rings etc. and OEM top end gaskets.

Anyone had good results with the JE pistons?

Yeah , JE is Good Stuff

Do you know if the deck height is any different on the JE TRX and CRF pistons?

Who is cutting your seats?

Service Moto in Tasmania. Taking the head to him today so he can drop the valves out for me and give me a price on a port and polish.

I got a price from ATVUNLIMITED in the US for a complete KW valve kit (intake and exhaust) of $398 including postage to Australia.

Still looking around for prices, I can get the TRX SS full kit a lot cheaper.

Is there a lot of difference between KW and OEM?

I was planning on changing my stock 450X valves over to stainless (More than likely Kibblewhite) in my stock 450X head some time in the future
After reading around a bit I am looking at fitting the earlier 450R head on my 09 450X can anyone explain in detail what I will need to change to run the R head with say an 02R cam?
From what I have found I should be able to transfer my 09 X Cam tower over to the earlier R head, The cam holder / tower is the same part number for the 450R & the 450X so that would just leave the decomp setup that is different, Is that correct?

Any details or pics showing the conversion would be appreciated

Just a question, but why would you want to run the R head?

Main reason is I got hold of a brand new one for a real good price
Apart from that bigger valves (Not always an advantage unless the engine is built to suit), Better/cleaner ports than the X head (apparently?) + I was going to change the valves to stainless anyway so why not?
The Valves, springs & guides etc are actually cheaper too so spend less & gain a bit more performance
Seems to be plenty of people running the R head with no problems & they have mentioned a bit of an increase in power

The R head is a great upgrade if you don't mind loosing a little bottom end and moving it to the top of the RPM range. The X and R motor are the same other than the starter, gear ratio, Cam and head. If you do switch to the R head I suggest going with the 08 CRF 450 rR head. It has the same size exhaust valves as the x head, so the change in the low end will not feel so drastic. And the 1mm larger intake valve wakes up the top end for those long runs threw the desert. Or you can go with the 06 head that has 1mm larger intake and exhaust valves. This works great if you are going to do a big bore motor. Really livens things up.

Bigborethumpers.com has brand new CRF 450R heads available with stainless steel valves, heavy duty valve springs, and titanium retainers.Check them out. $550 for the 06 heads, and $575 for the 08 heads.  We also have Valve kits to rebuild your head if needed.

$550 / $575 US is not too bad bad for a complete assembled head ready to bolt on + ports matched to seats

http://www.bigborethumpers.com/newheads.html

Sadly with postage it would end up around $700 or so Australian dollars for us which is quite a bit

Racers ER I am guessing?>

Looks to be just a new head & kibblewhite valves

Bigborethumpers heads offer a bit more for your money

EDIT: Comparison, This what we mean by the different level of service & part/prices etc here in Aus>

This is what we get in Australia for $695AU....(From my local motorcycle wrecker/salvage) A broken old worn out head, What a joke cant believe he sells anything at all?>

Bit better of a deal below at $595AU (LOL) but still just a worn out old head, Certainly nothing I would use unless it was disassembled & rebuilt, May aswell buy a new head from the USA for less
