Do i need a special tool to remove steering head bearing bolt?

i just want to pull the steering head to grease the bearings. but i don't have a tool like this:

is there a way a remove this nut without that tool above, and without damaging it?

again, i dont want to remove the bearings, just grease them

No special tool needed. If that nut is tight enough to need a special tool, its too damn tight. That nut just preloads the bearings, shouldn't be "tight" at all.

Like Brandon said, use a punch and hammer to tap it counter clockwise to loosen, or even a pair of channel locks.
