Another shoulder injury - Torn rotator cuff or ?

Recommended Posts

On Wednesday, was lifting weights (flat bench, chest press with dumb bells) when right shoulder gave out. People 10 feet away, even heard the snapping sound. So, had to drop the weights as the shoulder gave out. Immediate excruciating pain.

Been taking four Aleve a day with not even a hint of relief.

Can't sleep on that side, or find a comfortable position to keep the arm in, whether standing, sitting, etc. The pain seems to be the worse on the side-towards the back of the joint.

Unable to do side raises. Also, when putting the arm in a position to shake someone's hand, can't externally rotate the arm. And definitely nothing overhead. The pain radiates down the bicep too.

Unfortunately, can't get into any doctor until after the middle of May.....really don't want to have to go to the ER for this either.

Wondering if there's anything to do in the interim? (Or how bad it is....dislocated?? Rotator cuff tear???)

Injuries while lifting weights in which a pop occurs are more likely than not, an injury to the long head of the biceps tendon.  Somewhat less commonly, an tear of the rotator cuff or a posterior subluxation (partial dislocation) of the shoulder occurs.

Patients with long head of the biceps problems are likely to have pain running down the front of the arm in line with the biceps muscle. When the tendon tears completely, a Popeye like biceps muscle is commonly seen.

Where do you live? Most of our bigger ortho clinics in Mpls have drop in acute injury centers. DONT go to a reg doc, hit an ortho clinic asap. Good luck!
