we have 2 sets of standard wheels and have dented 3 rims

are we unlucky or are the DID rims made of cheese and should be binned ?

Rims do dent on any bike but rims that oval out or crack are not maintained proper. We have hit rocks hard with 0psi and never dented, scratched but no dents. Proper spoke tension keeps wheels true. Also tire selection plays a role in protecting rims from dents.

we run 14psi and maybe up to 16psi and run Michelin starcross tyres,

never had a problem with the KTM rims, only since we have moved to Honda that we notice they seem to be weak

I have noticed recently (and others have mentioned it too) that the Michelins just dont seem to last as long as they used to, with knobs just tearing off

What tyres do others use with good results ?

We have a Dunlop on a practice wheel, it certainly lasts longer but he says it gives a harsh feeling and doesnt grip as well.

I have used intermediate starcross tires on a mod KLX110 and a KLX140l w/bb with great wear but that was several years ago. We have switched to MX51 with very good results in the many different type of conditions. One tire we hated were the 403/403, just didn't have the bite/flotation needed for the different trail conditions. Also did not last not as long as the starcross. Now we run Motoz IT or X-Circuit on all the big bikes. These would be good for minis if they weren't so heavy. Stiff sidewall that you can run 0psi with no issues.
