Collarbone Malunion surgery - DrMark

Recommended Posts

Hey Dr.Mark, thought I'd share an x-ray of my collarbone surgery, done by a specialist from the Sutter Health network.

I had a badly angulated malunion for 3 years and suffered from backpain and weakness- so i decided to finally fix it. so far, back pain is totally gone.

check it out and tell me what you think..

It looks like one of mine.  Nice job.

thanks, i'm happy with it. though it may resemble your work, there are some notable differences-

two, it's an anterior fixation, which eliminates the prominence of the plate, and prevents irritation from backpacks. when i stand upright, it rotates into my pectoral muscle, so it isn't even exposed. some other benefits of anterior fixation are better screw purchase, and the fact that growth plates are not crossed by the system.

also, he used dissolvable sutures, not staples, as you typically use.

one, it's not an acumed plate, it's a synthes plate. link: http://www.synthes.com/sites/NA/Products/Trauma/PlateandScrewSystems/Pages/LCP_Clavicle_Plate_System.aspx

I have been using the anterior Synthes plate ever since it came out five years ago. I have abandoned dissolvable sutures because they commonly cause a foreign body reaction as they dissolve that mimics infection and causes everyone high anxiety.

The biggest problem with the Synthes plate is that it costs more than Blue Cross reimburses the hospital for the entire procedure.  While, its a great instrument, the average person who reads this website can no longer afford to have it, thanks to our President.

Yeah, good thing I was in the military and served a country that doesn't forget my sacrifice. Obama paid the entire $60,000 in full, and I was only responsible for about 10$.

As they say, you get what you pay for. Thanks for your perspective.
