getting into off road racing

Recommended Posts

So i want to try to do a couple local off road events/races.  Im just a beginner so nothing super serious..  Couple questions though.  Can someone tell me what the difference is between cross country and hare scrambles? Also, reading into the events it sounds like most are about 3 hours long.  Im just wondering what you do for gas for that.  I have a yz125 with the stock tank (7 or 8 litres I beileve) Is that enough gas to make it through or would I want to look into getting an oversize tank (id rather not as this is just for fun).  Also it says spark arrestors are mandatory.  Does that mean i have to buy a different silencer for my bike or there something you can put on it? (i just have the stock silencer on there).  And how long are these races normally?

Cross country and hare scrambles are sometimes the same type of event. Cross country is usually a little more open and faster and may include some natural terrain motocross. Hare scrambles usually incorporate some single track woods in their events. Most novice classes race for 60-90 minutes. Your local series rules will determine event lengths - there are no universal consistent rules outside of a national series (AMA or GNCC) . A full MX tank will go 90 minutes for anyone at a B pace or slower. Nearly every series will require spark arrestors in their rules, some will check for them, others will not.

You will need to do some research for the racing organizations and race schedules in your area. The regional forums will have more info.
