How do you guys clean behind your flywheel cover?

Recommended Posts

Went riding last weekend and it was really really wet. Like 1 foot deep puddles and everything up in Belfair, WA. Came home and while unloading my bike I noticed muddy water dripping out of behind my flywheel cover. I was like oh ok my gasket must be toast from me re using it 4 times. It's not bad behind there just annoyed stuff got in there. It's like dried muddy water in there. I was just gonna use compressed air. Is this safe?

This happens on my bike as well.  I've always just pulled the cover and used parts cleaner.  I've also had the flywheel start to develop some rust so I pull that, clean it using wd-40 and a brillo pad, then spray it down with parts cleaner.

The stock plastic cover, it will warp and water gets in. Buy a Boyesen cover which is aluminum...

Thanks. Any input about safety of using h2o & wd40 to cleanse in there? Obviously use low pressure h2o.

I would recommend trying to use a contact cleaner that says it won't attack rubber or plastic.  Remember that you have a crank seal under there and the stator windings are a varnish coated  wire.  Brake cleaner can sometimes damage rubber and plastic...

Something like this:  http://www.wd40specialist.com/products/contact-cleaner/
