DRZ Chain slack?

Hey all - in my noobness I don't know the answer to this. Maybe it's obvious but it doesn't seem right so I am posting here.

Whether I am on the bike or not...there is significant slack in the chain on my DRZ both on the topside and bottom side.

Is this normal? and if not...how did it get this way? I would estimate that there is enough slack for at least an inch of vertical play.

Thanks

The book specs 1.6-2 inches of chain slack while on the side stand.

Thanks for the info. It doesn't seem to get much tighter when I (190lbs) am on the bike though?

A smiling chain is a happy chain. It needs to have enough slack that it will not get too tight throughout the suspensions entire range of travel.
