New 85 XR200R, a few questions.

Recommended Posts

I just picked up an 85 XR200R. It runs, but has a really loud engine knock. I pulled the valve covericon1.png off and found the rockers are badly worn, and two of the cam lobes are pretty flat. Could this be the cause of the knock? I have found some rockers on Ebay, but no luck finding a cam yet. Does anybody know where to get one, or anyone have one to sell?

Thanks

Does anyone know if the cam from an 85 xr250 is interchangeable with an 85 xr200? I found an xr250 cam, part #14100-KT1-010, the xr200 cam part# is 14100-KK0-010. I don't know if these are close enough to interchange?

Thanks

XR200R '84/'85 KK0 XR250R '84/'85 KK1 XL350R '84/'85 KL3

Parts that are KKO were created for the 84/85 XR200R.

I believe the XR200 for 84/85 is a sleeved down XR250, so you might be able to replace the whole top end.

The KKO part migh have been used for other motorcycles or atvs.

The OP has a 84-85 XR200R which is a  RFVC four valve engine based on the 84-85 XR250R engine. It is basically a small bore XR250R, 67x56.5 vs 75x56.5.

The model code on the engine and in the VIN should be ME05.  The XR250R is ME06.

The middle there digits in the Honda part number is a Honda Product Code indicating what product the part was designed for:

KK0 is 84-85 XR200R

KK1 is 84-85 XR250R

KT1 is 86-95 XR250R

Does it make sense that the "knock" I'm hearing could come from the worn cam and rockers? I'm just worried that I might have a rod knock or something and replacing the cam won't even fix it. The two lobes that are flattened are the exhaust lobes, and the corresponding rockers are really worn. My thinking is that maybe I'm hearing the valves snap shut quickly as the rocker falls off the sharp edge of the flattened lobe, rather than smoothly closing the valve as the rocker glides over the round lobe surface? Does that make sense?

Did you ever get an answer on this one? I noticed that the 250 cam's are easily available and interchange with a the '91 Xr250. MegaCycle lists a 250 cam in their catalog, but nothing for the XR200.  If the 250 cam fits, this is great news for future repair issues on my XR200 head.
