250x on 87 Octane

Recommended Posts

I know it seems a bit backwards, but out of curiosity: what would it take for a stock 2006 CRF250x to run safely on 87 octane rather than 91?

I'm mostly curious because it's the only "high performance" 4t in my stable and it's a pain to carry a 5 gallon can of premium for one bike that might need 2 gallons on a long day.

The timing would need to be retarded to prevent knocking.  Since that is built into the CDI module, there's no way to change it.

The other way to attack it would be with a lower compression piston or thicket head gasket (increase the volume of the cylinder)

I suppose it depends on how you ride.

For trail riding and occasionally getting on the throttle, you probably would not have much of a problem.   Racing and going all out, I would think you would.

But I don't think Honda would spec out 91 octane if their wasn't a reason to do so.
