XR400 forks on a 1996 XR250

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 1996 XR250 last week. I've had several XR400's before but this is the first XR250. The front forks on this thing are leaking very bad & will need a full rebuild. I'm 6'3" & 200lbs & ride Michigan trails(lots of whoops & sand)so I started looking into getting the forks rebuilt & for some forks springs for my weight but apparently no one makes them any more. In my search for springs I seen a few people talking about swapping out the 250 front forks for the XR400 front forks. Has anyone here done this upgrade? I this a good upgrade? What other parts from the XR400 would I need?  Do I need the triple clamps from the XR400 or can I bore the ones from my XR250 out?

You need the triple clamps from a 400. Don't try and have the 250 clamps bored out.

You will also need the 400 axle, front wheel bearings, seals and spacers. The 400 wheel bearings will press into the 250 front wheel hub.
