xr350 ENGINE OIL QUESTION

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a xr350 that i just put new rings and replaced the timing chain and new valves. After putting it back together Ive noticed that when I change the oil it gets dark in color very quick. For example I changed it yesterday and rode 50 miles and when I got back I drained the oil to inspect it. I attached a photo. Is this normal for a 1984 xr350? Is this because of the clutch being in the engine oil? Shouldnt the oil stay looking almost new for quite some time?

What oil are you using?

Try Rotella 15w40.  It has a bit more detergent in it.

See if that cleans it out then run a 20w50 synthetic motorcycle oil, especially in hot weather.

Thanks. Could it be from the clutch plates? Ive been using castrol 1040 and 2050.

The engine was cleaned inside theres no carbon in the cylinder.

If I use synthetic once do I have to use synthetic only from now on.

You can mix conventional and synthetic oils together. No problem.

Did you install aftermarket clutch plates?  Some of those don't last a day.
