My dirtbike won't idle?

Recommended Posts

Hi I own a old xr80 and I can never seem to get it to idle. I have cleaned the carb countless times and I know it's fine beacuse it'll start first kick everytime and runs great, I just never can get it to idle,I warm it up and it'll just try to idle but it goes to slow and just shuts off, I got the idle set by a guy who does this everyday. Note the bike smokes a very little bit. What do you guys think is the problem? Thanks!

Same one I had in it when it was brining oil.

You could have a fouled plug...... check to see what color the plug looks like.

Put in a new spark plug and see if it keeps idle, could be a simple fix.  But take note of your plug to see if it's running lean or rich and adjust your carb accordingly.

Two places to look.

1. Fuel screw up under the front of the carb. It should have a spring, a washer and an O-ring on top.

If the O-ring is missing or damaged it will not idle well.

2. Pilot/slow jet is clogged or something in the pilot circuit is clogged.

These two things affect idle. fule screw should be about 2 turns out from all the way in. DO NOT tighten it, just turn in until it stops, then back out two turns.
