XT Intake Boot Fix?

Recommended Posts

Hey TT, I've been doing some reading about the intake boots on these XTs going bad over time and separating from the aluminum bits and how it can lead to a burnt up piston from all the extra air (riiight?)

Aaaanyways, I checked mine out because the piston I pulled out during my rebuild was practically melted on the intake side and I didn't want it to happen to me. So I sprayed some carb cleaner around the boots and the idle changed so I went to the store to do the hi-temp tube mod I've seen on here and found some exhaust system sealer. Anybody try this? It was cheap so I grabbed it but I was wondering if it would work to seal up space between the rubber and the plug?

I had total separation on my intake boot. Took the rubber off and filed the taper off of the metal part, so that the sides were straight. Repaired with a piece of radiator hose and gasket sealant. Haven't riden much since, but it seems to have worked and there are similar repairs listed here on the forum.
