Is this what I need to hook up trailer brake lights?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm completely new to trailers and I'm picking one up tonight. I want to make sure I get everything I need to tow it with my truck. I'm stopping at harbor freight on my way to get a hitch and then I think I also need this convertor to hook the brakes up.

Here's a picture they sent me of the cord on the trailer. Thanks!

If your truck has the 7 way round connector then yes the easiest way is to get an adapter like you posted.

That is one plug type. there are several, and you have to know whats on your truck, and whats on the trailer, and if an adapter is neccesary. My truck is small, and for the longest time, i assumed i had a "4-way" on the back, as most small trailers use that. Wrong. Apparently, the previous owner on my truck had a wazoo trailer with the round 7-way plug...

anyways, here is a wikipedia page showing all the plug types common to North America, and even tells you what wire does what if you need to wire your own up. if you don't have the proper plug on the back of your truck to match the trailer one, don't sweat it. head down to napa or autozone, they should have ALL the adapters.
