My dirt bike engine is leaking gass

Recommended Posts

I just bought a xl250r that was made in 1983 off my friend for really cheap and it runs but it started leaking gass and i thought it was going to catch on fire. I dont know anything about moters or engines but this is a picture of where its leaking from. 027_zpsf0514fe1.jpg?t=1400290258

I think it's just a valve cover leak. Some might have a gasket, but I think most use a type of RTV that doesn't require air to cure. Yamaseal is one I think or permatex anaerobic. You'll probably want a manual or step by step guidance to try and get the cover off. If it's not leaking a lot, you can put that one off and do some simpler repairs first. Just keep an eye on oil level, and make sure the bike is level when you check it. You can probably find the owners manual on-line for checking the oil properly. Over or under oiled is equally bad... much more sensitive that a car. On a vintage, check it before every ride.
