Honda CR or CRF Aluminum Frame (AF) Generations?

Recommended Posts

What are the different revision/generation on the Honda Aluminum frame?

I would like to do a engine swap in a late model frame and put in a 2001 two stroke engine.

What years are the changes?

For the 250-450F

1st Gen: 1997-1999

2nd Gen: 2000-2001

3rd Gen: 2002-2004 (2007 for the 2 strokes)

4th Gen: 2005-2008

5th Gen: 2009-2012

6th Gen: 2013-

Which generation would be the best for doing a 4 stroke to 2 stroke conversion? I would like to use a 2001 honda ( of course) motor.

Also, which generation handled the best?

If you're going to do a swap i would do a gen 5. To me it was a lot easier than a gen4. The gen three is a weekend swap with very little gain. Are you going to do it yourself? I will be seeking some assistance on the swap.  It looks straight forward by the videos I have watched but I cannot weld alumium.  Who do you suggest to do this or the welding?

So Gen 5 is that way to go then,  What about the Gen 6?

Gen 6 would be the ultimate but parts are less common and more expensive. I'm in my gen 5 about $4500-5000 tops. And i'm in Hawaii so parts are rare or I have to pay insane shipping prices to get parts shipped here. You can pm me and i can give you more details on the build. I'm about to do another one in a month or so.

Are you sure this is the correct information on the different generations?

I have looked on ebay and this info does not line up on year models.

The mix up is in the 250f's lagging a year. The crf250 04-09 frame is totally differant from the 05-08 450. But they consider it the same gen

1st Gen: 1997-1999

2nd Gen: 2000-2001

3rd Gen: 2002-2004 (2007 for the 2 strokes)

4th Gen: 2005-2008

5th Gen: 2009-2012

6th Gen: 2013-

I looking to purchase a frame and the seller states this:

Quote

"Item Description:
This frame is from a 2006 CRF250r.

Fitment:
2004 - 2009 crf250r
2004 - 2014 crf250x- but there is no kickstand mounting so you will not have a kickstand for this frame"

So should this be a Gen 5 frame he is selling?

The CRF 250 remained the same frame until 2010 when it had a major upgrade to the gen 5 frame (2009-2012 CRF450)

I believe 04-09 is a gen 4 in the CRF250's.

Disregard the CRF250X model years as this bike remained unchanged over the years........hope this helpsimage.jpgimage.jpg
