2002 400exc

Recommended Posts

I have been out of the game for 8 years since shattering my femur. I'm looking at a 2002 400exc. Are their any inherent issues w this bike?

There are a whole bunch of things on ktmtalk in the RFS forum. I would try that. some say change the cam bearings and the cam sprocket which has a bolted on auto decompression part on the cam gear, it supposedly sometimes breaks off, bad. So the newer cam gear has it pressed on, much better. These are all pretty cheap upgrades. Some guys do 453 kits or a different cam but honestly I have ridden so many new and older KTM's I don't think you need to. It is a great bike and just works, easiest bike I ever rode, I was all over my buddies on their newer husky 450 and CRFR 450 the other day so it works just fine.

Here is what a friend of mine suggests but on the other hand a builder I know said the 02 didn't have most of these issue, definitely check that auto decom bolt on the cam gear. I'll eventually do it, maybe in June or July.

Mark I stole this from one of DJH's posts

These would be all the upgrades You might want do (assuming it has not been done). Part numbers included.

This upgrades the cam bearings, water pump seal, cam gear and the guide behind the flywheel

Add the locking lever for the shifter 77034024044 and you're good.

Or cam chain rivot link 59036013050

If you want to change it while you're in there

Cam chain 59036013000

If the bike is stripped/drained this is approximately 3 hours work at most. I have all the tools.

I owned a 2002 KTM 400EXC. It was the single worst bike I ever owned. KTM re did the suspension and geometries in 03. Get an 03 or newer. 02 had horrible 43mm WP forks. 03 went to 46mm I believe.

Have to disagree on the suspension, my 05 was a pos until tuned for $800, even my 08 needed the same, my 09 530 was easy and good but my 02 400 is just fine, set the spring rates properly and ride. No issues.
