Michigan trail recommendation?

Recommended Posts

Headed from Chicago area over to Central / North Michigan next week. I've ridden a few times over there already, but looking for some good current recommendations. Frederic, Kalkaska, and Grand Traverse have been good in the past. We're debating on going further north. We are trying to avoid highly traveled whooped out stuff. Love Hills and technical terrain. I'd love for any locals or recent visitors to weigh in!!

Thanks!

Just came from riding in Michigan 2 weeks ago. Awesome time at Fredrick, Kalkaska, and Tamahawk (A & B trail). Out of all of them, Kalkaska was the one not as whooped out. Ultimately all of them are going to have whoops in that sand ! Atlanta trail is also another good one but we did not hit that one this visit. When we were there in the fall we went there and it was also great, though it was alot of traffic.

Hope this helps !

Thanks for the info! What part of Kalkaska did you ride? I've never heard of the Atlanta trail. Will have to look that one up.

We rode all of the Kalkaska loop and was definately tons of fun once ya gets used to the sand !! (front brake is pretty much non-existant).

Atlanta is far up north, somewhere near the U.P.

The guys I go with have been going in the spring and fall since 1988 (before I was even born, haha). This was my second time coming up with them and I'm still getting used to all of the places / routes !

Baldwin has some good trails too.  You can hit the Big O and Little O.  There are some others too.  Little O is awesome, but you are going to find whooped out sections on any of the trails in Michigan at one point or other.

Moss lake is fun.  I believe its a 25mi loop that is CRAZY tight single track.  We thought we could do it in 3 hrs and it ended up taking 6 hrs because it was so tight and we ended up taking more breaks than we thought.

Bass Lake is another good one.... nearly 25mi loop.  Much more open and can carry good speed thru the whole thing.  Really Fun.
