2001 DR-Z400S - Few Questions

Recommended Posts

First off, thanks for all those that contribute here, been super helpful but a bit overwhelming to start.

I just bought my first bike, a 2001 DR-Z400S with just under 4k on the odometer.  I've put on a few hundred miles in the first week or two and I have a few random questions if ya'll don't mind.

  1. I had a stuck right rear passenger foot peg so I took it off but it appears to screw into the exhaust?  Is that a critical bolt, do I need to re-install the rear passenger pegs?
  2. Riding at about 30mph in 3rd at a very low RPM it seems like it surges, feels like engine breaking but bouncy if that makes any sense to anyone.  Normal?
  3. I get a lot of snap, crackle & pop from the exhaust, it seems like a lot of people have the same issue.  From what I know, the bike is completely stock, it doesn't seem to run rich.  I asked the local shop what a tune up would cost and they quoted me $440 not including parts, &%$#@!?
  4. The grips are worn through in some sports and need replacing, the stock grips are a bit hard and uncomfortable, any suggestions on something a little softer, i'll do mostly street/city riding for now.  Do I need to buy a new throttle tube everytime I replace grips, not sure what that entails?
  5. I was looking at getting rid of the stock tail light first, signals in the 2nd round.  I'm having a hard time figuring out if I just do the taillight and use stock signals do I need that extra IC Relay for $20 if I go with the DRC Edge 2?

Thanks for any input and sorry about the new guy questions.

I'll take a stab at 1,4,5 and leave 2, 3 for those with experience with stock components.

1. They make a footpeg eliminator bracket. I have this black one, but there are many options out there:

4. I am partial to pillow top MX grips. Extremely comfortable, very popular. You can use compressed air and blow in the side of the grip, or use a razor blade. You do not need to replace the throttle tube, just pick up some grip glue when installing new grips

Video on how to swap grips:

5. No extra hardware is needed for the DRC Edge Tail Light, you need the solid state relay if you are switching to LED turn signals to keep the stock flash rate. I also upgraded to the 12 o'clock labs tail light board, check out the youtube videos for it.

I've had good luck with this replacement turn signal relay, takes 3 minutes to pop out the old one and swap to this one:

Go nuts on youtube and search the forum. There are ton of videos and howtos going over all the basic stuff for the DRZ.

1. There used to be a custom bracket piece you can buy to replace the peg mount so the exhasut could still be affixed. I haven't been able to track it down, the links I found are dead.

2. This is probably be answered by others...I have little expertise here,

3. See #2

4. Pro Taper pillow top grips are very nice. Unless you want to spend an hour peeling the old grip off of the throttle tube, buy a new one. They are like $10.

5. The resistors to slow the blink rate are not compulsory. I like the faster blink rate but if you want the slow blink, use these - http://www.thumpertalk.com/shop/K-S-Technologies-Universal-In-Line-Resistors-24-0010-p4585952.html

Thanks!  Looks like I'll be putting the footpegs back on unless I can fab something up myself, don't feel like spending another $35 :)

1. The pegs stick sometimes if the ball bearing gets gritty, take the circlip off the pin and slide it out. Make sure the ball doesn't fly into your eye it is spring loaded. Clean the spring and ball with brake cleaner and reassemble. Voila no more sticky peg. My right peg was sticking really bad, I found the ball had worn a notch in the peg and it would hang up. Hit it with a file and it was good as new.

2. & 3. Confirm your pilot jet and fuel screw settings, should be an article in the FAQ

4. Renthal Kevlar are my absolute favorite

5. Nope as answered above
