The cases on the 98-99 are identical , transmissions parts , cranks and bearings are all the same , 92-99 that's what i meant sorry for the confusion.

I agree and you want to inspect them carefully before buying or you are just wasting money.

I thought the engines where the same from 92-01

A little background info. The 1992-2001 CR250 engine were evolutionary

rather than revolutionary. They all shared the 3rd generation rotary and

flap power valve which was more reliable and less complex than the set

up found on the 88-91s. The 00 and 01 engines featured bearings in

some places that had bushings on the earlier engines. In 1997, Honda

redesigned the coolant system and improved water flow throughout the

cylinder and head - which is why the 97-01 cylinder heads are physically

taller than the pre 97 heads. Honda also changed the water pump drive

gear from Nylon to steel at that time for increased duarbility. In 1998,

Honda switched to a flat top piston. IC went from analog to digital in

1997. All years featured the same transmissions, gear shift assemblies

and clutches. 92-98 were equipped with Keihin PJs (97-98 had TPS and

power jets). 99 and 00 were equipped with quad vent Keihin PWK air

strikers and the 01 came with the Mikuni TMX which Honda used for all

the subsequent case reed engines as well.

All produced good power but some years were better than others. Of the

"stealie" engines, the 95 cylinder was considered the best (I put a 95 top

end on the otherwise 93 engine I built for my stealie). Of the Aluminum

framed engines the 00 and 01 are regarded as the best. A lot of people

refer to Eric Gorr's comment about the 01 engine being the best, and from

a stock standpoint (except for the carburetor), that's probably true. What

many don't realize, is the 00 and 01 engines are identical except for the

cylinder and carburetor and Eric prefers the 00 cylinder over the 01 when

the engine is going to be ported. The 97-99 engines are hit and miss.

The 97 had very radical port timing and hits like a mule, so much so that

Honda went overboard with the 98 making it the mildest of the bunch.

For 99, Honda produced a very good cylinder and equipped the bike with

the PWK for a very good overall package.
