DT100 - Ignition questions

Recommended Posts

I have a 78 Yamaha DT100 bought it cheap and have rebuilt the carb, changed the gas, changed the plug, changed the frayed throttle cable. Finally started it up after about 6 months fresh gas and oil. Started the bike drove it 5 minutes and then it died. I went back over my previous work and everything seemed ok except no spark. I removed the kill switch (eliminate possibility) I get one spark out of 10 revolutions of the engine. I put the plug in another engine and it worked fine. As I see it I am done to the coil or the magneto.

How can I test the coil to determine if it is good or bad?

How can I determine if the magneto is good or bad?

Confused.

Like most 70s bikes the Dt100e has contact breakers(points ignition).

You should remove the flywheel and check to see that the points are not corroded, or just dirty.

Most just replace the points and condensor and replace(remount) the flywheel and set the points gap to .014" ,check that the points open when the timing marks line up and see if you have a spark then.

  good luck
