Fork rebound

Recommended Posts

Do fork rebound settings have any effect on ride height of the fork while going down the trail? Or just affect the speed of rebound when hitting something? Thanks.

no. ride height is a function of spring rate and pre-load.

er, well, unless it's so slow that the fork starts "packing"...then it could lower effectively the ride height for short stretches.

packing is when the suspension does not fully decompress before hitting the next bump. causing the suspension to stay down in the stroke...which effectively lowers the ride height for as long as it happens.

but, no.

It has a effect on cornering for sure , remove rebound till it pushes wide , then add and it will start to knife , the middle if these 2 settings should be ideal

Also, reb too slow and the front tire feels disconnected or vague. Too fast and the bars reb too much back up and at you.

This is indirectly related-

Packing-is this a low speed issue or a high speed issue ?

more likely to happen at high (bike) speeds since you are more likely to hit a succession of bumps quickly. (think washboarded dirt roads or braking bumps coming into a corner, trails with lots of roots/rocks, etc.)

Yep. ^^^

Packing is a high speed event, where your forks (or shock) don't have time to fully rebound before hitting the next bump. Think of your rebound as a ratchet in that case; each successive hit ratchets your suspension down another few mm, temporarily lowering ride height.

I don't know of any systems that have rebound settings so dramatic they would pack at low speed. Not saying they aren't out there, but never heard of that.
